Practical answers for importers, thatchers and builders considering Chinese water reed.

Home / FAQ

What is water reed and what is it used for?

Water reed (Phragmites australis), also called Norfolk or continental reed, is a tall wetland grass with a hard, hollow stem. Once dried and graded it is the premier material for thatched roofs, and is also used for ridging, fencing, screening and biobased construction.

How long does a water reed roof last?

A well-designed, well-laid water reed roof can last several decades — commonly 30 to 60 years — depending on roof pitch, climate, the skill of the thatcher and the quality of the reed. Steeper pitches and good ventilation extend life considerably.

What are your reed specifications?

Stem diameter typically ranges from 6 to 12 mm, with lengths available up to about 2.3 m and bundles tied to a circumference of roughly 60 cm. We grade by length and diameter and can prepare lots to your requirements.

What is the minimum order quantity?

We offer flexible quantities, from sample bundles for evaluation up to full 40-ft container loads. Tell us your project size and we’ll advise the most economical shipment.

Can I get a sample before ordering?

Yes. We are happy to send representative samples so you can assess stem hardness, colour, length and grading before committing to a container.

Which countries do you ship to?

We regularly ship to the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Spain, France, Denmark, the UK, Poland and other European markets, delivering to major ports.

How is the reed packed and shipped?

Reed is tied into dense, regular bundles, then stacked and loaded into 40-ft containers to maximise volume and protect the material in transit.

How do you ensure consistent quality?

Reed is winter-cut, cleaned of leaf and weed, sorted by length and diameter, and inspected for moisture before dispatch. Consistent bundles mean predictable coverage on the roof.
