Quality you can build on
Durable thatch starts with the right reed. Here is how we secure quality from the wetland to the bundle.
Reed from the Zhalong wetland region
All of our raw material comes from the Zhalong wetland region of Heilongjiang in Northeast China — one of the largest reed wetlands in the world and a protected area of international ecological importance.
A single, traceable origin matters: it means consistent fibre from season to season, rather than a blend of unknown sources. The cold climate and clean water produce a hard, straight, uniformly thick stem.
- One traceable growing region
- Cold-climate, clean-water ecosystem
- Uniform thickness season to season
- Naturally hard, straight stems

The qualities that decide roof life
Not all reed performs equally. These are the characteristics that separate durable thatching reed from the rest.
Hard, straight stems
Hard stems pack into a denser, more weather-resistant coat and resist crushing during laying and dressing.
Uniform thickness
Even diameter through the bundle gives a regular surface and predictable coverage per square metre.
Low moisture & clean
Properly dried reed, free of leaf and weed, resists rot and arrives in the condition the roofer needs.
Durability
Strong fibre laid at a good pitch is what delivers the decades of service life thatch is known for.

Prepared for European practice
European thatchers and building-material buyers work to clear expectations on reed dimensions, dryness and cleanliness. We prepare our reed with those expectations in mind.
Our bundles are graded by length and diameter and tied to a consistent circumference, so they integrate smoothly into established thatching methods in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and beyond.
- Graded to European thatching dimensions
- Dried for transport and storage
- Cleaned of leaf and weed content
- Consistent, regular bundling
How quality is secured
Winter harvest
Cutting in winter, when sap is low and stems are hard, preserves strength and colour.
Cleaning & sorting
Leaf, weed and broken stems are removed; reed is sorted by length and diameter.
Bundling
Reed is tied into dense, regular bundles to a consistent circumference.
Inspection
Moisture and cleanliness are checked before the reed is loaded for export.
